Glossary: atrium's terms in one place
Short definitions of atrium's levels — workspace, project, wing, room, pane, subtab — plus residents and the Vault, with the CLI name for each.
atrium nests its work in six levels. From the outside in:
workspace › project › wing › room › pane › subtab
A workspace holds projects, a project holds wings, a wing holds rooms, a room holds panes, and a pane can hold subtabs.
The levels
Workspace — A named group of projects, with its own icon and accent color. Switch workspaces to move between sets of projects, such as "Client work" and "Personal". More about workspaces.
Project — One folder on your computer (usually a git repository) opened in atrium. Each project keeps its own rooms, agents, notes, and tasks. A git worktree shows up as a child project. More about projects.
Wing — An optional group of rooms inside a project. The tab bar shows only the active wing's rooms. Every project starts with one wing, called main. More about wings.
Room — One screen of panes inside a project. A room shows up as a tab in the tab bar, or as a row in the rooms sidebar. New Room (Cmd+T on macOS) makes one. More about rooms.
Pane — One tile inside a room: a terminal, an agent chat, an editor, a browser, and so on. You split a room to add panes side by side. More about panes.
Subtab — Panes stacked in the same tile, with small tabs in the pane header. Only one of them shows at a time. New Subtab in the Pane menu adds one to the focused pane. More about subtabs.
Two more terms
Resident — A pane docked above or below a sidebar instead of sitting in a room. It stays visible in every room of the project. More about residents.
Vault — atrium's saved history: the full-app snapshots it takes over time, plus a searchable index of your past agent sessions. Open it from the Library (Cmd+Shift+L on macOS). More about the Vault.
Which "tab" is which?
- New Room makes a new room. Rooms are the tabs in the tab bar (or the rows in the rooms sidebar).
- New Subtab adds a subtab inside the focused pane. The room stays the same.
- Pop out lifts a pane out of the layout into a floating panel above the room. It is not a new room or a subtab.
The same terms in the CLI
The CLI kept its older names for two levels, so workspace means a different level there. atrium --help starts with the same map.
| In the app | In the CLI |
| Workspace | atrium collection |
| Project | atrium workspace, or its alias atrium project (--workspace, $ATRIUM_WORKSPACE_ID) |
| Wing | atrium wing |
| Room | atrium room ($ATRIUM_TAB_ID) |
| Pane | atrium pane |
| Subtab | atrium pane create --split <pane-id> --direction subtab |
| Resident | atrium pane dock, atrium pane undock, atrium pane pin |
| Vault | No CLI command |
See Naming: internals vs. UI for where the older names still appear, such as JSON fields and folders on disk.
